Therapy for Young Adults in Logan Square & Avondale — Colton Straus, LSW
There is a particular kind of disconnection that shows up in your 20s and early 30s. The life around you looks fine. Maybe even good. You are doing the things you were supposed to do, hitting the marks that were supposed to feel like something. And underneath all of it there is a gap between the life you are living and the life you actually want that you cannot quite close or explain.

It might be the sense that you are performing your life more than living it. Going through the motions of a career, a social life, a relationship, a daily routine, that looks coherent from the outside and feels vaguely hollow from the inside. Like you built something that fits the description but not the person.
It might be the anxiety that won't quit. The pressure to figure it out, to get it right, to not fall behind the imaginary pace at which everyone else seems to be moving. A constant low level urgency that makes it hard to be present even in the moments that are supposed to matter.
It might be the relationships that keep hitting the same wall. Different person, same dynamic. A pattern in how you connect with people, how close you let them get, how you handle conflict or intimacy or disappointment, that you can see clearly and cannot seem to change.
It might be the identity questions that keep surfacing. Who am I outside of the role I have been playing. What do I actually want versus what was I taught to want. What kind of life would feel genuinely mine rather than assembled from other people's expectations.
It might be the exhaustion of figuring all of this out alone. In a city that moves fast, in a neighborhood like Logan Square or Avondale where everyone around you seems to be building something, the pressure to have it together is real. And the loneliness of not quite having it together, of feeling disconnected from your own life while surrounded by people, is one of the most common and least talked about experiences of this decade of life.
You are not behind. You are not broken. You are navigating something genuinely difficult without a map. That deserves a real space.

The patterns you build in your 20s and early 30s have a long tail. The ways of managing stress, navigating relationships, understanding yourself, and making decisions that get established in this season tend to persist. Addressing them now, before they calcify into fixed ways of being, is some of the highest leverage work a person can do.
When this work gets done the disconnection closes. Not all at once. But gradually the life you are living starts to feel more like yours. The choices feel more intentional. The relationships get more real. The gap between who you are and who you want to be starts to narrow in ways that compound over time.

Young adults are some of my favorite people to work with because the questions they are sitting with are the most important ones there are. Who am I. What do I actually want. What kind of life is worth building. Those questions deserve honest engagement, not reassurance. I am not going to tell you everything is fine. I am going to help you figure out what is actually going on and what to do about it. Honesty over comfort — steady and warm, but not afraid to name what's actually going on.
