Not everyone is living the conventional script. Nine to five, mortgage, nuclear family, two weeks of vacation, retire at sixty-five. Some people looked at that script and decided it wasn't theirs. Or never felt like it was an option in the first place. Or tried it and found it didn't fit. If that's you, you deserve a therapist who doesn't spend the session trying to understand your life before they can help you with it.
Therapy for People Who Don't Fit the Mold — Kaydee Dolan, Learning Therapist

Maybe you're living alternatively in the most literal sense. A van, a tiny house, an intentional community, a life built around experiences rather than possessions. You've opted out of the consumer treadmill deliberately and thoughtfully. And you've discovered that opting out comes with its own particular challenges. The isolation of being misunderstood by most of the people in your life. The practical stressors of a life that doesn't have conventional safety nets. The identity questions that come with building something from scratch without a map.
Maybe you're navigating relationships that don't follow conventional structures. Polyamory, open relationships, relationship anarchy, chosen family as your primary unit of support. Relationships that are genuinely fulfilling and also genuinely complex in ways that most therapists don't have a framework for. You're tired of spending half the session explaining your relationship structure before you can get to the actual thing you came to work on.
Maybe you're anti-capitalist in a world that runs on capitalism. Trying to live according to values around community, sustainability, mutual aid, and intentional living in a culture that constantly pushes in the opposite direction. The cognitive dissonance of that gap is real. The grief of it is real. The exhaustion of swimming against the current every single day is real.
Maybe you're an artist, a creative, someone who has built a life around making things rather than accumulating things. The particular vulnerability of that life. The financial precarity, the identity questions, the way the world values what you do and doesn't always value how you do it.
Maybe you're simply someone who has always felt slightly outside the mainstream. Not in a way that's dramatic or that requires a label. Just a persistent sense of not quite fitting the mold that most people around you seem to fit without thinking about it.
Whatever your version of non-traditional looks like you deserve a therapist who meets you there without judgment, without confusion, and without making you do the work of explaining yourself before the actual work can begin.

Therapy for non-traditional lifestyles with me starts from a foundation of genuine curiosity rather than evaluation.
I am not going to assess your lifestyle against a conventional standard and find it wanting. I am not going to suggest that your relationship structure is the problem, that your alternative living situation is a symptom of something, or that the conventional path would serve you better. Your choices are yours. The work is everything else. The anxiety, the relationship dynamics, the identity questions, the practical stressors, the grief, the joy, the complexity of building a life that doesn't have a ready-made template. All of that gets worked on in a space that actually understands where you're coming from.
I bring a somatic awareness to this work that I find particularly useful for people navigating alternative lifestyles. A lot of the stress of living outside the mainstream is carried in the body. The hypervigilance of being misunderstood or judged. The physical experience of cognitive dissonance between your values and the world you're moving through. The exhaustion of constant navigation. Learning to recognize those somatic patterns and work with them directly is some of the most immediate and grounding work we do.
We also get curious about the internal landscape. The parts of you that are fully committed to the life you've chosen and the parts that carry doubt, fear, or grief about what was traded for it. Both are real. Both deserve space. Getting curious about that internal conversation rather than suppressing either side of it is where the most honest and useful work happens.
Mindfulness runs through everything. The practice of being genuinely present in the life you've actually built, rather than anxious about what other people think of it or grieving what you gave up to have it, is some of the most liberating work a person can do.
My approach is warm, genuinely non-judgmental, and frankly delighted by the variety of ways people are figuring out how to live. I am a supervised Learning Therapist working toward my LMFT, which means I bring real curiosity, fresh perspective, and the full support of clinical supervision to every session. It also means my rate is significantly more accessible than a fully licensed therapist. Good therapy for people outside the mainstream shouldn't itself be a mainstream luxury.

Living outside the conventional script is a genuine act of courage and intentionality. It's also genuinely hard in ways that don't always get acknowledged. The isolation, the practical complexity, the identity questions, the relationship dynamics, the grief of the road not taken alongside the joy of the road you chose. All of that deserves real support from someone who actually gets it.
When this work gets done something clarifies. The life you've built starts to feel more fully inhabited. The parts of yourself that have been in conflict start to find a more workable relationship with each other. The exhaustion of swimming against the current eases because you're doing it from a more grounded place. You stop explaining yourself and start just being yourself. That's a meaningful shift.

I became a therapist because I believe in the full range of human experience and the full range of ways people find meaning, connection, and aliveness. The conventional script is one way. It works for a lot of people. It's not the only way. If you've built something outside of it, or you're trying to, or you're just figuring out what that means for you, this is a space where that's not a problem to be solved. It's just where we start. Together we'll set goals, then set sails and explore.
