Feeling the summer blues? Nobody Warns You About the Summer Slump
Feeling down in the Winter makes sense. Shorter days, less light, harder to get out of bed. Nobody talks about the one that shows up in Summer. It's seventy-eight and sunny, your feed is full of rooftop patios and lake trips, and you still feel like you're dragging a sled through wet sand.
That's not you being ungrateful for good weather. It's a real pattern, and it's a lot more common than people admit.
It's Not Just You
Because it's supposed to be the easy season, most people think they should be feeling better than they are, and that gap between what they expect to feel and what they actually feel becomes its own weight.
It doesn't always look like sadness. More often it's irritability that wasn't there in the spring. Appetite that drops off. Trouble sleeping when it's still light out at 8:30 and eighty degrees at midnight. A restless, agitated energy instead of the heaviness people expect from depression. You're not sad, exactly. You're just off, and everyone around you seems to be having a better summer than you are.
Why Summer Hits Different
A few things stack on top of each other. Your routine falls apart. No school-year rhythm, schedules get looser, sleep gets later and worse. Heat itself disrupts sleep, and bad sleep alone can tank your mood inside a week.
Summer is also, for a lot of people, the busiest stretch of the year. Weddings, trips, weekend plans stacked on top of a full work week, with no real day off in sight. That kind of schedule runs you down even when every single thing on it is something you actually wanted to do, and the exhaustion it causes gets mistaken for laziness instead of what it is.
Then there's the social pressure. Summer comes with an unspoken expectation that you should be out, tan, social, doing something photo-worthy every weekend. If you're not, it's easy to feel like you're failing at the one season that's supposed to be fun. Add a feed full of everyone else's vacations and rooftop nights, and it starts to feel like proof you're behind, even though you're mostly seeing the ten best minutes of everyone else's summer.
None of that means something is wrong with you for finding this season harder. It means the season has its own set of pressures, and most people never hear that's a real thing.
If Summer feels heavier than it should, that's worth a conversation, not something to wait out until fall.
